Three Signs A Roof May Soon Develop Leaks

Posted on

Many homeowners wait for their roof to develop leaks, and when it does, they call a roofing company to come to make repairs. But what if there was a way to pre-emptively detect when leaks were about to occur so you could take care of the problem before water ends up in your home? Actually, there is. Keep an eye out for these three signs that your roof might soon develop leaks.

Protruding Nails

Climb up on a ladder as far as you are comfortable. Look across the roof, and see if you can spot any exposed nails. The nail heads are not meant to be visible when a roof is put into place. They should actually be covered by the shingle above them. However, if a roofing company has made repairs to your roof over the years, there might be some exposed nail heads. If they are poking up rather than covered by a swatch of roofing cement, water may soon start leaking in around them. If you're handy, you can go pound them back in and cover them in new cement yourself. Otherwise, you can have a roofing team do this for you.

Lack of Flashing

Flashing is sheets of metal that are typically applied around chimneys and in spots where two parts of a roof come together. The flashing is typically layered in such a way that you can see if poking out. If you do not see flashing around a chimney or in a roof valley, that's a red flag. It's used in these areas because they are prone to leaks without it. Have a roofing company come add flashing. Similarly, if there is flashing, but it is peeling or corroding, consider having it replaced before you end up with leaks.

Poor Gutters

Your gutters minimize the time that water spends on your roof. If your gutters are constantly clogging, or if they are angled in such a way that they do not drain well, that could cause water accumulation on the roof. You might just need to have gutter guards installed to keep leaves out of the gutters, or you might want to have a roofing company come to adjust the slope of the gutters to improve drainage. Just do something soon before you also need to have soggy attic beams replaced!

If you notice any of the issues above, leaks are imminent, so act quickly. Get in touch with a company like Henry Roofing, Inc. to get started.
