5 Helpful Tools To Keep In Your Horse Trailer
When you pack your horse trailer, you probably think primarily of the tack and horse-related items that you need. Perhaps you also pack a first aid kit and some water in case of an emergency. But what about trailer-related tools? Having the right tools can make all of the difference when you're in a tough spot, and even just when you need to hook up and come home. Here are five helpful tools worth keeping in your trailer.
Hitch Grip Carrying Tool
When you drop the trailer off at a show, you might want to remove your hitch head to prevent anyone from backing into it when the truck is parked. But carrying the hitch head is cumbersome. A hitch grip carrying tool hooks right into the hitch head, making it easy to unscrew from your truck. Then, you just hang onto the handle and carry the hitch head where it needs to go. Keep one of these in your trailer to make your unhitching process so much easier.
Wheel Chocks
While you could use a block of wood to stop your trailer tires from rolling when the trailer is parked, it's tough to find a piece of wood that's just the right size. Instead, you should invest in a set of plastic wheel chocks. You'll want four -- two to put behind the back wheels, and two to put in front of the front wheels.
Flares
If you have an emergency and need to pull over on the side of the road at night, you will need a way to alert passersby of your trailer so they do not run into it. A set of road flares will do the trick. Hopefully, you never have to use them!
A Trailer Aid
A trailer aid is a little ramp you can drive your trailer up onto on one side when you need to change a tire. It's absolutely essential if you want to change a tire without a jack in an emergency.
A Lug Wrench
This is the other major piece of equipment you will need to change a tire. It looks like an x and has openings on all four bars into which a wheel lug will fit. Removing a wheel with a real lug wrench is so much easier than using any other type of tool, since the lug wrench is designed to give you more torque.
With these five tools in your trailer, you'll be all set for most situations.
